The kitchen island has become an important element to today’s kitchen. In the 50’s it was common to see a kitchen table in the middle of the room.  This was the gathering place for the family to eat together, but it was also a work area for the cook.  Yes, tables are only 30″ high so it was not comfortable or convenient for the taller person, but it did solve the problem of not having enough workspace in the kitchen.

Today’s kitchen islands have taken the place of that center table and have become one of the the most important elements in designing a kitchen.  Many of the islands I have designed have sinks, cooktops, seating and storage.  Some of them have become works of art creating a focal point for the space.
